Meaning ‘market’ in Italian, Merkato 55 is the latest venture form chef Marcus Samuelsson.
It is an “African brasserie” which opened in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, designed to recall the kaleidoscopic energy of Africa’s largest outdoor market, Addis Merkato in Ethiopia’s capital city, Addis Ababa.
By not focusing entirely on one country’s cuisine, a diverse sampling dishes from throughout the continent is offered. The African flavours and traditions will be filtered through the chef’s classical training and New York perspective.
